Astrocartography asks where on Earth that same sky would have placed each planet on one of the chart's four angles: rising, setting, directly overhead or directly below. Those locations are drawn as planetary lines across a world map, and each one marks a place where a particular part of your chart might become more noticeable. Astrocartography meaning
Astrocartography is a branch of astrology that maps your birth chart onto the Earth.
A conventional birth chart shows where the Sun, Moon and planets appeared in the zodiac at the exact time and place you were born. Astrocartography uses the same birth data but asks a geographical question: where in the world was each planet rising, setting, directly overhead or directly below at the moment of your birth? Join those locations together and you get the lines on an astrocartography map.
Each line combines two pieces of information:
- A planet, which describes the type of energy or experience being emphasized.
- An angle, which describes the area of life through which that energy may appear.
For example, a Venus line is not automatically a romance line. Venus on the Midheaven may be interpreted through career, visibility, design or public appeal. Venus on the Descendant is more directly associated with relationships and the people you attract.
The planet tells you what is being emphasized. The angle tells you where in your life you may notice it.
How does astrocartography work?
Astrocartography begins with your birth date, exact birth time and birthplace. At any given moment, every planet occupies a particular position in the sky. Depending on where you were standing on Earth at that moment, a planet could have been:
- Rising on the eastern horizon.
- Setting on the western horizon.
- At the highest point in the sky.
- At the lowest point beneath the Earth.
Astrocartography calculates every location where those angular positions occurred when you were born. Those locations become your planetary lines.
The astronomical calculation determines where the lines fall. Astrology supplies the meaning assigned to each planet and angle.
This distinction matters. The geometry of the map can be calculated, but the belief that living near a Venus line improves relationships, or that a Saturn line creates difficult lessons, is an astrological interpretation. Astrocartography is not a scientifically validated method of predicting what will happen in a location. It can still be used as a framework for reflection, particularly when it helps you ask more precise questions about what you want from a place.
Astrocartography map explanation
An astrocartography map can look like someone dropped several sets of brightly coloured wires across the planet. Reading it becomes easier once you separate the map into three parts: planets, angles and location.
1. Find the planetary symbol. Each line is labelled with a planetary glyph or name, such as Venus, Jupiter, Saturn or Mars. The planet describes the main theme associated with that line. Venus is connected with attraction and pleasure. Jupiter is connected with growth and expansion. Saturn is connected with responsibility, limitation and long-term construction.
2. Identify the angle. The planetary name will usually be paired with one of four abbreviations — AC or ASC for the Ascendant, DC or DSC for the Descendant, MC for the Midheaven, and IC for the Imum Coeli. A Venus MC line and a Venus DC line are both Venus lines, but they are not interpreted in the same way.
3. Look at the cities near the line. The line shows where that planet was angular at your birth. A city does not necessarily need to sit directly on top of a line to be considered relevant. Astrologers generally read a line as stronger closer to its exact location, but there is no universally agreed distance at which a line suddenly stops mattering. Distance should be treated as a gradient rather than an on-or-off switch.
4. Read the planet and angle together. Do not interpret the planet alone. Combine its meaning with the angle, then compare that combination with what you actually want from the location.
A Mars MC location may be useful when you need professional momentum. The same intensity may be exhausting if your main goal is rest. A Moon IC location may support home, family and emotional recovery. It may feel too private or inward if you are trying to become more publicly visible.
The question is not simply, “Is this a good line?” It is, “Is this emphasis useful for the life I am trying to build?”
What do the four angles mean?
Midheaven lines are marked MC. They show where a planet was at the highest point of the chart when you were born, and are commonly interpreted through career, public identity, ambition, reputation and recognition. A Sun lineSun line/astrocartography/sun-line on the MC may emphasize leadership or recognition. A Saturn lineSaturn line/astrocartography/saturn-line on the MC may bring heavier professional responsibility, slower progress, or work that produces something durable.
Imum Coeli lines represent the point directly opposite the Midheaven. They are associated with home, family, ancestry, privacy, emotional foundations and the self that exists outside public view. These places may direct attention inward, even when the planet involved is normally considered social or ambitious. A Moon IC location may feel deeply familiar. A Pluto IC location may bring more complicated questions around family, control, memory, or what home means to you.
Ascendant lines show where a planet was rising on the eastern horizon. They are associated with identity, appearance, vitality, self-expression and the impression you make before you have explained yourself. A Mars Ascendant line may feel energizing, competitive or physically intense. A Venus Ascendant line may be associated with ease, style, attraction, or feeling more comfortable being seen.
Descendant lines show where a planet was setting on the western horizon. They are interpreted through partnership, close relationships, collaboration, conflict and the qualities you encounter through other people. Descendant locations can describe who you attract as much as they describe how you behave. A Venus Descendant line may emphasize connection and receptivity. A Saturn Descendant line may make relationships feel more serious, demanding or structured.

Why exact birth time matters
Birth time is one of the most consequential inputs in astrocartography.
The planets move relatively slowly through the zodiac. The Earth rotates much faster, moving approximately 15 degrees of longitude in one hour. Because astrocartography depends on what was rising, setting, overhead or below at the time of birth, even a modest time error can move your lines significantly.
MC and IC lines shift in a more predictable way because they are based primarily on longitude. Ascendant and Descendant lines curve across the globe and can shift unevenly, particularly at higher latitudes.

Does being near a line guarantee an experience?
No.
A Venus line cannot guarantee love. A Jupiter line cannot guarantee wealth. A Sun line cannot guarantee fame. A difficult line cannot guarantee disaster either.
Your natal chart, the angle involved, nearby lines, your reason for going and the realities of the place all affect the interpretation. So do the parts of life astrology cannot calculate: money, housing, health, language, discrimination, immigration rules, community, and whether your industry exists there.
A planetary line is an emphasis, not an outcome.
What if a city is not near any of my lines?
A city without a major line is not automatically wrong for you.
Some people experience locations away from their strongest lines as quieter or less demanding. That can be useful when you need stability, neutrality, or room to make decisions without one theme dominating the experience.
Your best location does not have to be the place with the most dramatic astrology. Sometimes the useful city is the one where your life is allowed to be ordinary.
Is it different for travel and relocation?
The map does not change, but the amount of time you spend in a place changes how you experience it.
A short trip can be a useful experiment. It may reveal the immediate tone of a place without showing what daily life there would become. A week on a Venus line may feel beautiful and restorative because holidays already prioritize pleasure. That does not tell you how the same city feels during a normal work month.
Relocation gives the themes more time to compound. Before moving, use your map to create a shortlist, apply practical filters, and visit the places that survive those filters outside peak vacation mode.
Astrocartography should help you investigate a city more carefully. It should not be the reason you stop investigating it.
