THE VENUS LINE

Venus governs attraction, harmony, taste and what you find beautiful. On the map, a Venus line marks the longitudes where Venus was rising, setting or overhead at the moment you were born.

Astrologically, these places are associated with being received well. Not admired for achievement — that is closer to the Sun — but simply liked, and comfortable in your own presence.

People often describe Venus locations as places where they relaxed faster than expected. Clothes feel right. Food tastes better. Strangers are easier to talk to.

The most commonly reported quality is not romance but ease — a drop in the low-level effort of being a person in public. Romance, where it happens, tends to follow from that.

Venus is associated with work where taste is the product: design, hospitality, styling, curation, anything where the judgement of what looks and feels right is the skill being sold.

It is less associated with ambition or visibility. A Venus line may make a place pleasant to build a career in without doing much to accelerate one — which is worth knowing before you move somewhere for work.

This is the line most often cited in relationship astrology, and the one most often oversold. A Venus line does not deliver a partner. What it is associated with is being met warmly and reading as approachable.

Some people find Venus places make existing relationships softer. Others find the same ease makes them less discerning — pleasant company is easy to find there, which is not the same as compatible company.

• Creative work in which taste and pleasure are the point
• Meeting people without the usual friction of arriving somewhere new
• Recovering a sense of yourself as likeable after a period that dented it

• Comfort can quietly become inertia — Venus places are easy to stay in past their usefulness
• Overspending: the same taste that makes a place delightful makes it expensive
• Charm can substitute for depth in new relationships formed here
• A pleasant life is not automatically a purposeful one, and Venus says nothing about purpose

Venus lines are among the best places to visit and among the trickiest to move to. A week on one is often genuinely restorative.

Before relocating, spend time there in an ordinary month rather than on holiday — the qualities associated with Venus are exactly the ones a holiday manufactures anyway, so a holiday is a poor test of whether the place itself is doing anything.
